NDP MP Christine Moore (Abitibi-Témiscamingue) issued the following statement after the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies won their first Memorial Cup:

“On Tuesday afternoon, the Memorial Cup was paraded in the streets of Rouyn-Noranda for the very first time. After defeating the Halifax Mooseheads in the finals, the Huskies brought the precious trophy home for the first time to Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

Led by Mario Pouliot, the Huskies had one of the greatest seasons in the history of Canadian junior hockey; 59 wins, including a 25 game winning streak, and victory in both the President’s Cup and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Championship.

I want to personally congratulate all the players, as well the president, Jacque Blais, and all the members of the organizations who contributed to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies’ success. I thank them for shining a spotlight on the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.

Although I can’t participate in the parade, I was able to celebrate my team’s victory in Ottawa. My MP colleagues, whose teams were defeated during the championship, were all good sports. They honoured their bets and wore the jersey of the winning team: our Huskies. Congratulations everyone and see you next year! Go Huskies go!”
