Food Waste Awareness

WHEREAS:

  1. Canadians waste the equivalent of approximately $31 billion a year on food that goes to landfills and composting;
  2. In Canada, 6 million tonnes of food is wasted each year, which works out to 127 kg per inhabitant;
  3. Most food waste occurs toward the end of the food supply chain, with processors, retailers and consumers;
  4. Food waste has significant impacts environmentally, socially and economically;

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED CITIZENS OF CANADA, CALL UPON THE HOUSE OF COMMONS:

  1. To declare an annual National Food Waste Awareness Day;
  2. To determine solutions to food waste through a national awareness campaign;
  3. To make it easier for businesses to donate unsold food products that are safe for consumption to community organizations and food banks;

To reduce the environmental impact of producing food that is not consumed by encouraging more sustainable food production methods.
